Analog vs Digital Pull Tester: Which One Do You Need?

By the Force-Test team, St. Petersburg, FL · Last reviewed October 2026

If you run ABAA T0002 air barrier adhesion tests, you need a digital pull tester, because the method requires a digital gauge accurate to 0.5% of full scale. For roofing fastener pull tests under ANSI/SPRI FX-1, either type works: an analog tester ($1,150) is the lower-cost choice, while a digital tester ($1,750) gives finer, easier-to-read results. Both hold the peak reading until you reset it.

How to choose in 5 steps

Step 1: Start with the standard

If any of your work is ABAA T0002, buy digital. If it’s roofing fastener pulls under FX-1, or general field pull testing, either type can work.

Step 2: Estimate your highest load

Think about the strongest fastener or anchor you’ll pull. Pick a capacity that keeps your normal readings well inside the gauge range, with some headroom.

Step 3: Check accuracy at your typical reading

Accuracy is usually stated against full scale, so a gauge sized far above your loads is less precise at the low end. FX-1 needs ±5% of the reading, so don’t oversize an analog gauge.

Step 4: Weigh readability and records

A digital display removes dial-reading guesswork and makes it easier for different crew members to record the same number.

Step 5: Budget for fixtures and calibration

Add any fixtures you need and plan on yearly calibration ($150 for Force-Test pull testers).

Frequently asked questions

Is a digital pull tester more accurate than analog?

Yes. Our digital testers are accurate to 0.5% of full scale; our analog testers are ±3%. For many roofing tests both are accurate enough; for ABAA T0002 only the digital qualifies.

Do analog pull testers hold the peak reading?

Yes. Both our analog and digital testers keep the peak force on the gauge until you reset it.

Can I use an analog pull tester for ABAA tests?

Not for ABAA T0002, which requires a digital gauge accurate to 0.5% of full scale. Check your specification if it names a different method.

Which capacity should I buy?

Choose the lowest capacity that comfortably covers your strongest expected pull. Analog testers come in 100 to 2,000 lb; digital in 1,000 or 2,000 lb. Call us with your fastener type and we’ll help you choose.

Do analog and digital testers use the same fixtures?

Yes. Both use the same SP1 frame and work with all Force-Test fixtures and most Com-Ten fixtures.

Do both need calibration?

Yes. FX-1 and ABAA T0002 both require calibration within the last 12 months. We calibrate Force-Test pull testers for $150.
